Both Whitefish High School Basketball teams were in Bigfork, on Saturday, for a conference double header.
The Lady Dawgs entered the contest with redemption on the mind after falling in OT, the last time they met.
Allie Shors pregame stated "we have to have grit."
The Lady Dawgs used stifling defense & timely shooting to upend the Bigfork Valkyries, Saturday, by a final score of 41-40.
Saturday’s 41–40 win ended a drought that dated back to January 12, 2005 — the last time the Lady Dawgs defeated Bigfork.
Whitefish opened the game strong, highlighted by an Allie Shors buzzer beating three to close out the opening frame. Whitefish led 17-13 after one quarter of play.
This game would turn into a low scoring slugfest with each team exchanging blow for blow. Reese Hudson would put her stamp on things in the 2nd, closing out the 1st half, dropping in a big three with seconds to go and the Lady Dawgs took a 26-22 lead into the intermission.
Bigfork's Paeton Gunlock, the Carroll College Commit, dropped in 13 first half points.
The third quarter was a grind with each team showing off their defensive prowess. Hudson had the highlight play of the quarter, hitting on a 4-point play (made the 3 and was fouled). The Lady Dawgs held a 36-31 advantage after 3 quarters.
Bigfork would score the first 6 points of the 4th quarter but Whitefish had answeres from Avery Orme and Sammie Shors.
Whitefish held the 41-40 advantage late with just a few seconds to go. Paeten Gunlock grabbed the inbounds pass and was met by Orme defensively. Gunlock went for the crossover, Orme fell down while Gunlock simultaneously tossed up a circus shot and missed. Sammie Shors pulled down the rebound, was fouled with just 0.4 on the clock and the Lady Dawgs held on for the win.
Avery Orme led the way with 14 points while Allie Shors added 11. Reese Hudson had 10 and Sammie Shors finished with 6 and the game sealing rebound.
Bigfork's Paeten Gunlock led all scorers with 22.
